VIP Winnable Battle Recognition Programs

In 2011, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) named injury prevention one of its 10 Winnable Battles. The Injury Prevention Winnable Battle initiative will be promoted to mobilize a statewide network of violence and injury prevention (VIP) professionals who are actively engaged in implementing evidence-based prevention strategies.

The Injury Prevention Winnable Battle Team is in the process of enlisting, equipping, and engaging VIP Advocates and Programs of Excellence in all 64 counties to implement effective policies and practices that impact the five priority injury areas by April 2016, including motor vehicle, older adult falls, suicide, prescription drug overdose, and child maltreatment.

VIP Winnable Battle Program of Excellence

CDPHE wants to recognize more than just the advocate professionals that are preventing injury in Colorado. The VIP Winnable Battle Programs of Excellence recognition will highlight sustainable and evidence-based programs that are being implemented around the state. Programs of Excellence will demonstrate the following: strong programmatic infrastructure, data-driven VIP programs or policies, partnerships and coalition participation, effective communication, evidence-based programs or policies, and strong program evaluation efforts.

The VIP Programs of Excellence recognition process will be piloted with motor vehicle safety and older adult fall prevention professionals and programs to achieve the following health outcomes by 2016:
1) Decrease teen motor vehicle death rates.
2) Increase the use of seat belts from 82.1 percent to 90 percent.
3) Decrease the rate of fall-related hospitalization among adults ages 65 and older.
