Promoting Lethal Means Safety Among Veterans at Risk for Suicide

Joe Simonetti, MD, MPH, Attending Physician, Denver VA Medical Center & Investigator, VA Rocky Mountain Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC)

Joe Simonetti is an attending physician in the Hospital Medicine Program of the Denver VA Medical Center and an investigator in the VA Rocky Mountain Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) and the Denver-Seattle Center of Innovation for Veteran-Centered and Value-Driven Care (DiSCOVVR). His focus is on developing evidence-based, patient-centered strategies to promote lethal means safety, particularly firearm safety, among Veterans at risk for suicide.

During his presentation, Dr. Simonetti will provide an overview of the burden of suicide among the Veteran population, discuss current suicide prevention strategies within VHA, and outline some key next steps in developing interventions aimed at promoting lethal means safety among Veterans.
