Now Available: How-to Guides for CDC's Essentials for Childhood Initiative

Are you implementing or getting ready to implement CDC’s Essentials for Childhood Initiative?

If yes, there are two new documents from CDC’s Division of Violence Prevention that supplement theEssentials for Childhood Framework. The how-to guides can help you start the CDC’s Essentials for Childhood Initiative in your community and prevent child maltreatment from happening by assuring safe, stable, nurturing relationships and environments for children.

Building Community Commitment for Safe, Stable, Nurturing Relationships and Environmentsis a how-to guide that introduces nine key elements of successful efforts that raise awareness and build commitment for safe, stable, nurturing relationships and environments. Each element has examples and is organized into one of three clusters:
  • developing a vision
  • raising awareness, and
  • partnering with others.
Promoting Positive Community Norms is a how-to guide that explains how to encourage the creation of social norms that increase understanding and support of safe, stable, nurturing relationships and environments for children and families. This document provides prevention leaders with tips and a way to learn about:
  • the power of positive community norms,
  • the importance of understanding the difference between actual and perceived norms, and
  • a seven step process for growing positive community norms at state and community levels.
