The USA Today article, Obama targets sexual assault problem, highlights the focus of the Obama Administration on the problem of sexual assaults. Specifically, President Obama is creating a task force that has 90 days to develop recommendations for colleges to prevent and respond to sexual assault. This focus reflects the staggering rates of sexual assault on college campuses highlighted in the report, ‘Rape and Sexual Assault: A Renewed Call to Action.’
The Sexual Violence Prevention (SVP) Program at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is funding nine agencies to implement primary prevention programming for youth ages 12-25. This work aligns with the focus of the President by engaging and educating youth to impact risk and protective factors relevant to sexual violence such as attitudes and beliefs about gender roles and information, knowledge and skills for healthy sexuality. The intended impact of arming youth with skills and knowledge about healthy gender roles and healthy sexual behaviors is to decrease overall sexual assaults; including sexual assaults on college campuses.
