The Public Health Impact of Suicide in Colorado: Prevention and Intervention Strategies

In 2012, 1,053 Coloradans died by suicide. Annually, more Coloradans die by suicide than die by homicide, motor vehicle crash, breast cancer, and diabetes. This presentation will examine suicide data in Colorado, and will discuss several strategic and innovative prevention strategies being implemented and evaluated targeting those at high risk for suicide.
Jarrod Hindman, MS is the Director of the Office of Suicide Prevention in the Injury, Suicide and Violence Prevention Branch at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). Mr. Hindman directs the legislatively mandated Office of Suicide Prevention, which is responsible for serving as the lead entity for suicide prevention and intervention efforts, collaborating with Colorado communities to reduce the number of suicide deaths and attempts statewide. Activities of the Office of Suicide Prevention include increasing public awareness, providing resource information, and disseminating and monitoring community grants for suicide prevention.
