Recent young adult deaths highlight Colorado's growing painkiller abuse problem

The recent prescription drug overdose deaths of 4 young adults in Arapahoe County has highlighted the important role of the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP). Prescribers who use the PDMP regularly can identify patients with significant access to dangerous prescription drugs and alter their prescribing practices accordingly. Articles like the one in 9News have shown how limited the use of this great tool by Colorado prescribers has been. Through collaborative efforts with the Governor's office, many state agencies and partners are working to increase prescriber's use of the PDMP as one strategy to reach the Colorado Winnable Battle goal of reducing prescription drug misuse by 58 percent in the next three years.
